intellADAPT Sponsors Massachusetts STEM Summit to Improve STEM Education Using Adaptive Solutions

On November 1, 2016, intellADAPT, a Boston-based educational technology and Adaptive Learning company, was one of the sponsors of the Massachusetts STEM Summit at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA. The intellADAPT booth at the MA STEM Summit presented adaptive learning solutions to increase STEM population amongst high-school and college students.

IntellADAPT, a company funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), SBIR grants, proudly showcased its patented Adaptive 2.0 Learning Technology that uses Big-data Analytics and Brain Computer Interface (EEG headband) to record brain activity of the users to determine their optimal learning strategy. At the intellADAPT booth, visitors received valuable information on how the ground-breaking adaptive learning technology works and how schools and universities can participate in a National Study on the use of Adaptive Learning for STEM Education, funded by the NSF.

The intellADAPT team generated a great deal of interest in the homework substitute aspect of intellADAPT’s Adaptive Resource for the Classroom or ARC. The first Physics ARC is deployed in numerous school systems participating in the national study conducted by intellADAPT.

Dr. Nishikant Sonwalkar, founder and President of intellADAPT engaged with numerous potential partner institutions and companies present at the summit and encouraged them to explore the opportunity of implementing intellADAPT’s adaptive STEM courses by participating in pilot programs offered in Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. He said “There is an acute need for developing STEM competency in schools and colleges to fill the growing unmet need for STEM jobs. We need to prepare next generation of engineers and scientists now to meet the challenge of future demand”. IntellADAPT saw an overwhelming response from visitors and fellow participants that were convinced that they could use intellADAPT’s technology in their STEM programs to enhance learning outcome.

The intellADAPT team would like to give a special thank you to Dana Bienkowski and Lynn Griesemer for organizing this conference and allowing intellADAPT to demonstrate adaptive learning solutions for schools and colleges.

intellADAPT Initiates National Pilot with Six HBCUs at UDC

On Thursday, October 6, 2016, intellADAPT, a Boston based educational technology and Adaptive Learning Startup, held two events at The University of the District of Columbia, in Washington, DC. This was the first phase of the National Science Foundation funded pilot project which will provide opportunities for six participating Historically Black Colleges and Universities to explore and implement intellADAPT’s patented Adaptive 2.0 technology. This phase of the pilot will be ongoing over the next nine months.

The events held October 6th included a one-hour Open Discussion about intellADAPT’s Adaptive 2.0 education technology. This session was led by Dr. Nish Sonwalkar, (ScD. MIT), intellADAPT’s CEO and Founder and members of intellADAPT’s staff. The second even of the day was a Workshop for representatives from the six participating HBCUs will be held and conducted by intellADAPT staff.

The six HBCUs participating were Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Central State University (OH), Tougaloo College, The University of the District of Columbia, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shores. IntellADAPT looks forward to initiating collaborative efforts with these institutions to implement the pilot program in the near future.

The intellADAPT team would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Carl Moore and his staff at The University of the District of Columbia for serving as host for this important event.

IntellADAPT Launches First Big Data Analytics Driven Adaptive AP Physics Course

The percentage of students who receive a 5 on the Advanced Placement (AP) Physics 1 and Physics 2 exams is 4.6% and 8.5% respectively. (CollegeBoard, 2016). The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that by 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs due to the lack of qualified workers to fill them. IntellADAPT is positioned to ensure that U.S. students are prepared for the exciting career opportunities in STEM-related fields.

IntellADAPT, a leader in adaptive learning technology, has recently launched the first Adaptive AP Physics course to prepare students for the AP physics exams.  A high score in AP physics exams enables high school students to get into good universities and reduces cost of education by earning college credits. The adaptive course is integrated with the classroom instruction as an adaptive resource for the classroom (ARC).   This ARC allows students to learn difficult concepts in physics with differentiated instructional design and continuous intelligent feedback with assessment and remediation. ARC uses big data analytics to enable teachers to get real time student data to improve learning outcome for AP classes.

Dr. Nish Sonwalkar, ScD MIT, founder and CEO of intellADAPT, commented “There is an acute shortage of AP Physics teachers in educational workforce today. As Physics is gateway course to various fields within STEM education, it is essential that we provide necessary adaptive resources and big data analytics to enhance physics education. We are delighted to receive National Science Foundation funding to provide adaptive learning for physics education across the country.”

This coming spring semester 2017, IntellADAPT is working with numerous teachers and hundreds of students across USA. The adaptive physics offering is used to better accommodate individual learner’s needs to deepen their comprehension of physics.  Physics is a foundational course for many STEM careers, including those in the health care industry, yet many students struggle through the content, get discouraged, and drop out of their dream majors as a result.

“Big data analytics driven adaptive learning technology is a powerful learning tool for students to master difficult concepts using multiple learning strategies,” said Charles McClinton, PhD.  VP of Academic Program Development. “The platform enables teachers to manage their class and improve competency of the students simultaneously.”

About intellADAPT, Inc.:  IntellADAPT is an EdwiseTech Inc. company, a pioneer in adaptive learning and is based in UMass Boston’s Venture Development Center.  Founded in 2014, its products are based upon cognitive learning theories and the latest brainwave science to perform real-time analytics and drive deep comprehension. The company has developed a patented Adaptive 2.0 platform to enable advanced education technology for STEM education.

Participate in the National Field Trials for Adaptive Physics Education

National Science Foundation funded research project on “big data analytics driven adaptive learning for STEM education” is inviting participation of school systems for field trials.

Under this project, 10 selected high schools will be offered use of the innovative adaptive learning platform for improving learning outcome for STEM students at no cost.

In previous field trials,

  • Students have reported that receiving real-time assessment feedback and further instruction in their preferred learning style significantly improved their comprehension.
  • Students progressed through the activities at their own pace without fear of peer judgement on their performance.
  • Instructors received learner analytics, both for each individual student and for entire classes, that assisted with tweaking their lectures to improve learning outcome.

Using intellADAPT will take no more faculty time than the usual class preparation. Faculty participation will include attendance at a 1-hour online webinar in September to train on the intellADAPT technology and attendance at 1-2 optional conference calls of all instructors in this study to discuss experiences and trade ideas. No travel, no lengthy surveys, only sharing thoughts and experiences with other instructors.
